On the shores of Lei Yue Mun

Anthony James

Just a ten minute walk from Yau Tong lies a small fishing village along the shores of Victoria Harbour. This quaint quiet spot lies in parallel and is surrounded by the metropolis of Hong Kong which provides some spectacular opportunities for photography. This place is well suited for sunset panoramas as it faces westerly overlooking the Kowloon peninsula and Hong Kong island.

With tripod and camera in hand I prepared the shot and had planned originally to stitch around 12 images in a portrait orientation to cover most of urban downtown Hong Kong with a colourful sunset in the middle. I had arrived early just to scope out the place as I had never visited this corner of Hong Kong before and was surprised to find there were only a handful of people at this quiet spot of the city. Being one of the busiest harbours in the world there was a fair amount of sea traffic coming in and out of the scene which made making a consistent panorama difficult. After attempting the 12 stitch image I found that by the time I had finished the set the light had changed drastically in the scene and had to redo a few times. I then decided to go for a more simplistic shot with three horizontal images. Luckily I was able to get a consistent set of images without too much variation of light in the final photo. The sky was filled with billowing clouds that hung above the city capturing the last rays of light whilst the forest of buildings had started to light up resulting in an image that covers the golden hour and blue hour of the day.

If you would like to find a corner of Hong Kong which hasn't been over photographed then I would highly recommend taking the MTR to Yau Tong and walking down the hill to the shores of Lei Yue Mun.
